LA Vegan – Vegan Thai on the Wetside that doesn’t suck

By now you all know my basic disdain of vegan Thai food. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, vegan Thai is a sad representation of what eating vegan in LA can entail. And like I’ve said before, sometimes you just gotta do it up. For me that occasion struck this Monday when I saw a pain management specialist due to a back injury. I ended up getting 6 shots with zero anesthesia, having a panic attack and crying hysterically for a half an hour. Worst day ever. The only thing that was gonna ease my pain was some greasy Thai food, and since I was pretty immobile after my shots, the place had to deliver. My most recent Thai experience was at California Vegan and I really was not into my meal. I thought I’d take my chances with LA Vegan, a local vegan Thai restaurant, even though I haven’t loved it in the past. Turns out I am really glad I gave them a second chance.

I’ve only ordered in from LA Vegan so I can’t attest to the atmosphere there…. who goes out to eat vegan Thai anyways, am I right ladiez????

Most recently I ordered the Broccoli with soy chicken entree and the Pad Thai.

BROCCOL - l Sauteed broccoli, carrot, mushroom with garlic sauce, soy chicken

Loved the gravy sauce the broccoli came with and the soy chicken is actually one of the best fake meats I’ve tasted at a Thai restaurant. The texture is so much better than your generic soy meat – it’s thicker, juicer and has an overall better flavor.

PAD THAI -Thin rice noodles stir fried with bean sprouts, green onion, and crushed peanut, with soy chciken

The pad thai was okay, a little under flavored on a count of the sparse sauce, but once it sat and possibly “marinated” for a few hours and I ate it out of the fridge, it was pretty darn good.

Previously I have gotten the Spicy Eggplant and Pad See Eww, both of which I liked.

SPICY EGGPLANT - Sauteed eggplant with mushroom sauce, garlic chili, onions, bell peppers, and basil leaves.

The spicy eggplant is really oily, but hey, it’s vegan Thai, what did you expect? Vega thai is def a treat and not a staple.

PAD SEE EW - Flat rice noodle stir fried with bean sprouts, green onions, and crushed peanut, soy chicken

The Pad See Eww is really good. The sauce that flavored the noodles is soy sauce based, sweet and has just enough salt. I would suggest asking for extra sauce on the noodle dishes here, since they tend to be a little dry and under seasoned.

Overall LA Vegan is a solid vegan Thai restaurant. Great for delivery and great when you are feeling like you just need an greasy, carby plate of naughtiness and don’t wanna leave your bed to get it. If you are gonna do vegan Thai, do LA Vegan.
